A
Academic Liaison
The Libraries' Academic Liaison Team act as a communications vehicle between the libraries and the Institute. Individual team members are assigned as primary contacts to individual departments.
Annual Reports
A selection of private and public companies' annual reports are held at Basement Level in the Luke Wadding Library.
Archives
Archived books are listed on the catalogue. Their numbers are preceded by a capital A, for example, A657.4. Archived books can be borrowed - request them at the Circulation Desk.
Assistive Technology Resource Centre
The Assistive Technology Room is reserved for patrons with special needs. It is wheelchair accessible, and is equipped with assistive technology software.
ATHENS – Remote Access
ATHENS is a facility, which allows access to the library databases remotely, for example, from a home PC. Register for an ATHENS username and password at the Information Desk or online at Register with Athens.
Audio-Visual
Audio-visual material, including language packs and videos are available to borrow.
Audio-Visual: Music
The Music collection, which comprises videos, CDs, records and tapes, is held in College St Campus Library.

Call Numbers
Books are shelved in the library in numerical order by numbers known as call numbers. The call numbers are on stickers on the spine of each book.
Catalogue
WIT Libraries' online catalogue is named OPAC. OPAC is a searchable database that lists the entire stock of WIT libraries.
Circulation Desk
The Circulation Desk is where all library materials are issued and returned. Staff and students cannot borrow without valid library cards. The desk closes 15 minutes before the library closes.
Collection Development Plan
WIT Libraries' Collection Development Policy covers print, audio-visual, and electronic materials. It also deals with the issue of libraries and copyright.
College Street Campus Library
The College Street Campus Library caters for the subject areas taught in the Department of Humanities, and the School of Education & Professional Development, located at College Street Campus. WIT staff and students are welcome to use both WIT libraries.
Computers
PCs for student use are available in the Luke Wadding and College Street Campus Libraries. All provide access to MS Office applications and free access to the Internet.

Databases
Databases are collections of online journal articles. WIT Libraries subscribe to a number of research databases across a range of subject areas. All databases are accessible within WIT and many are also accessible remotely.
Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
The DDC system assigns a distinct number to every subject area and to all sub-sections within each subject area. Books are then shelved in numerical order.
Dictionaries
Subject and foreign language dictionaries are shelved at Entry Level in the Luke Wadding Library.
Donations
We appreciate each donation of materials and money to WIT Libraries and we will take every opportunity to acknowledge the generous and continuing support of library benefactors. These donations are vital to the library: they enhance the distinctiveness of our collection and they allow the library to advance its programmes and services.
DVD
Includes DVD Feature Film Collection and Mathtutor. Search DVD collection by entering ‘DVD’ in the Dewey Number Search on the WITcat.

E
Electronic JournalsAlso called e-journals or online journals, electronic journals are serial publications in digital format.
Enquiries
Call to the Information Desk, or contact your Academic Liaison Officer with any queries regarding any aspect of the library service.
Erga
Erga: the Institute Collection is a collection of books and journal articles written by WIT staff. Erga is on display at the Luke Wadding Library Entrance.
E-Theses Guidelines
Theses for research Doctoral and Masters Degrees must be deposited in the Institutional Repository. This is in addition to the deposit of the print theses - E-Theses Guidelines.
External Borrowers
External membership of WIT Libraries is available to individuals and groups. External borrowers are eligible to use both the Luke Wadding and College Street Campus Libraries. Fees are paid on an annual basis.

Fines
Fines are incurred when materials are overdue - Long loan items: €0.50 per day overdue and Short loan items: €1.50 per day overdue. The overdue items must be returned and the fines paid in full before any more items may be borrowed.

Group Study RoomsEach school has a dedicated Meeting Room at Basement Level in the Luke Wadding Library. These rooms may be booked for group project work. They are equipped with PCs and projectors.

I
Information DeskThe Information Desk is located directly behind the Circulation Desk at Entry Level in the Luke Wadding Library. Information Desk Staff are pleased to answer queries and/or offer assistance on any aspect of the library service.
Instant Messaging (IM)
Technology that allows two people to chat electronically in real time. The IM Reference Service allows you to ask library staff a reference or research question without having to leave your computer.
Institutional Repository
The Institutional Repository is a joint venture between WIT Libraries and the Research Support Unit at WIT. It is an open access database which contains digital copies of academic research by WIT staff as well as Doctoral and research Masters Degree theses.
Inter-Library Loans
The Inter-Library Loan service borrows or sources an item that is currently not available in WIT Libraries.
In Transit
Items travelling between the two libraries. ‘In Transit’ appears under Status on the item’s record on WITcat.

Journals - PrintWIT Libraries has a large print journal collection. Journal titles held in each library relate to the courses offered at each campus.

Language Room
Situated on the Basement Level of the Luke Wadding Library. Contains language related audio, visual and CD-Rom materials. Facilities include TV, video, DVD and audio equipment. All materials may be borrowed.
Learning Support Centre
The Learning Support Centre Team offers tutorials and training in the effective use of library technologies. The Centre caters for both individuals and groups.
Lending Collection
This collection refers to long-loan items that may be reserved and/or renewed by all borrowers. Lending items are subject to fines of €0.35 per day overdue.
Letter of Introduction
A Letter of Introduction allows WIT students/staff to visit another library for research purposes.
Library Card
WIT ID cards, available on registration from the WIT Card Office, are also library borrowing cards. Staff and students cannot borrow without valid cards.
Library Help Guides
A selection of guides on searching and researching. Library Help Guides are available online and in print format at the Information Desk.

Library Subject Guides
Available for a variety of WIT subjects. Library Subject Guides are available online and in print format at the Information Desk.
Luke Wadding Library
The name of the library on the Cork Road Campus. Called after Fr. Luke Wadding (1588 -1657), a Waterford born scholar and historian.

Microfiche Reader
A microfiche reader is available in the Luke Wadding Library.
My Library Account
The 'My WITcat' feature on WITcat, the library catalogue, allows users to access their borrower records.

NewspapersWe hold a selection of foreign language and business newspapers. Many newspapers are also available online.

P
PIN (Personal Identification Number)A PIN is required in order to access your borrower record and to reserve and renew lending items. Call to the Circulation Desk to set up a PIN on your library account.
Photocopying/Printing
Photocopiers/printers are located in WIT Libraries.
Postgraduate Areas
Two dedicated research postgraduate suites and designated spaces at Top Level for taught masters in the Luke Wadding Library. Postgraduates may also access the Postgraduate Meeting Room.

Reference
Materials in the Reference Collection include atlases, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, biographies and bibliographies. They are for library use only, and may not be borrowed.
Regulations
Library regulations include information on security issues and a code of conduct.
Renewals
Long loan books may be renewed once. This may be done online via WITcat, the library catalogue or by phone.
Reservations/Holds
Using WITcat, reservations/hold requests may be placed on long loan books that are on loan.
Reserve Collection
The Reserve Collection is available from the Information Desk. The collection comprises lecturer-files, reprints and desk reserve items that academic staff wish to make available to their students. Each file may be borrowed for one hour for library use only.

S
Short Loan CollectionShort loan items are two day loans. They are identifiable by the red tape on the spine of each item. Short loans cannot be reserved or renewed and are subject to fines of €1.50 per day overdue.
Special Collections
The Special Collections Room in Luke Wadding Library (LB 30) houses the Christ Church Cathedral Collection of ecclesiastical, theology and law books, some of which date from the 16th century to the present day. Viewing is by appointment only.
Special Needs
The Assistive Technology Resource Centre is reserved for users with special needs.
Staff Reading Area
Situated at Basement level in the Luke Wadding Library, the Staff Reading Area is equipped with four PCs providing access to MS Office applications, free access to the Internet and connection to a printer.

Study Areas
There are designated reading/study areas in both the Luke Wadding and College Street Campus libraries where readers are obliged to maintain silence and to respect a quiet atmosphere conducive to study.

Thesis Room – Postgraduate
Theses held in the Thesis Room are for library use only. The room is equipped with a photocopier. Material may be copied subject to copyright law. Note: Undergraduate theses are shelved on the Top Floor.
Transitory Shelves
Shelves on each floor and beside the Circulation Desk in College Street Campus Library where books are held before being shelved.

W
WebsiteThe library website contains comprehensive information on WIT Libraries. It also provides access to both WITcat, the library catalogue, and to our range of electronic databases and online journals.
Websites by Subject
A listing of a number of useful websites that have been selected and evaluated by library staff. It covers all of the subject areas at WIT, and will help with using the Internet for academic research.
WiFi
The Luke Wadding Library is a wireless zone. The Internet may be accessed by all registered students and staff from laptops with a wireless card.
