About Electronic Journals

Also called e-journals or online journals, Electronic Journals are serial publications in digital format. In other words, the full text of the journal is published in electronic format on an on-going basis. Electronic journals are most commonly delivered through the World Wide Web but they can also be delivered by e-mail or on CD-ROM.

Points to remember about Electronic Journals :

  • the online version may not be identical to the print version - the online version may not, for example, include news items or advertisements
  • generally, only the more recent years of journals are available in electronic format
  • some titles may be published in solely electronic format - there is no print version
  • many journals will have a homepage on the web with freely accessible tables of contents, lists of weblinks etc. but subscriber-only access to the full-text of articles
  • e-mail alerts: e-journals frequently have a facility where users can register online to receive updates
