Luke Wadding Lunchtime Lecture Series
Waterford Institute of Technology Libraries is delighted to announce the programme for the fourth annual
Luke Wadding public lecture series. The lecture series will be held on three consecutive Wednesdays, the 8th, 15th and 22nd June in the Auditorium in the main building on the Cork Road Campus.
Confirmed speakers for the lecture series are Mr. Jim Power, Mr. Michael Walsh and Mr. John Delaney.
1.00pm Wednesday 8th June: Mr. Jim Power
Jim Power will give a lecture on the economic outlook and the ongoing economic crisis facing Ireland.
Jim Power joined Friends First Group in 2000 as Chief Economist; he was formerly Chief Economist at Bank of Ireland and Treasury Economist at AIB Group. Jim Power is a frequent contributor to media on economic, financial and housing market issues, and writes extensively on these issues for various publications.
Jim Power is editor of the Friends First ‘Quarterly Economic Outlook’, which has become established as one of Ireland’s leading economic commentaries on the Irish economy. Jim Power teaches on Masters Programmes in DCU and UCD Smurfit School of Business. He is author of ‘Picking up the Pieces' which was published in 2010 by Blackhall which plots the demise of the Irish economy and the measures that now need to be taken to get the economy growing again.
1.00pm Wednesday 15th June: Mr. Michael Walsh
Michael Walsh will give a lecture on development in Waterford and the Viking Triangle.
Michael Walsh was appointed Waterford City Manager in 2007; he was formerly Senior Executive Engineer in Limerick and Director of Planning, Culture and HR Services with Waterford City Council. Michael Walsh is acknowledged as playing a pivotal role in the completion of the City Bypass, the House of Waterford Crystal development on The Mall, the renovation of the Theatre Royal and in the preparations for the Tall Ships Races later this month.
1.00pm Wednesday 22nd June: Mr. John Delaney
John Delaney will give a lecture on the development of the Football Association of Ireland, the Aviva stadium and the future of Irish football.
John Delaney was the youngest Treasurer in the history of the Football Association of Ireland. John Delaney became full-time Chief Executive of the FAI in 2005. John Delaney has directed wide-ranging changes in the Association during his tenure, including the move to a new National Sports Campus and HQ of the FAI in Abbotstown. John Delaney is acknowledged as having a deep commitment to developing all levels of domestic and grassroots football, and has initiated many educational programmes such as the Intercultural Football Program.
John Delaney was heavily involved in the redevelopment of the old Lansdowne Road stadium and he is currently Chairman of the new AVIVA stadium, which hosted its first major European football final in May this year. In addition John is also a member of the UEFA disciplinary committee and Vice-President of the Olympic Council of Ireland.
Lectures will last for approximately 1 hour and will include time for questions. Admissions to the lectures are free of charge and open to all. Refreshments will be served on the day.
