Luke Wadding Lunchtime Lecture Series

Waterford Institute of Technology Libraries is delighted to announce the programme for the upcoming Luke Wadding Lunchtime Lecture Series.

The speakers are Mr. Pat Leahy, Ms Alice McDermott and Dr. Séamus Ó Diollúin.

1.00pm Wednesday 16th June: Dr. Séamus Ó Diollúin

Dr. Séamus Ó Diollúin is a lecturer in Gaeilge at Waterford Institute of Technology.  Dr. Ó Diollúin holds an M.A. and PhD from Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

Dr. Séamus Ó Diollúin will give a lecture entitled Go Meiriceá Siar: Aspects of the Irish Language in 19th Century USA.  This lecture will look at the Irish language in 19th century America – a time when record numbers of Irish people left these shores and looked to North America as a promised land.  Dr. Ó Diollúin has presented lectures on this topic in Belfast, Dublin, Limerick and Boston.

1.00pm Wednesday 9th June: Ms Alice McDermott

Alice McDermott is a lecturer in History and Cultural Studies at Waterford Institute of Technology.  Alice McDermott is a graduate of University College, Galway and University of Limerick from which she holds a B.A. in English and History, an M.A. in History and an M.A. in History and Local Studies.

Alice McDermott will give a lecture on Bridget Redmond: The Keeper of the Redmondite Flame in Waterford.  A TD for Waterford Constituency from 1932-1952, Bridget Redmond was the wife of William Redmond and daughter in law of John Redmond.

The Lunchtime Lecture Series will be held in the Auditorium in the main building on the Cork Road Campus.  Admissions to the lectures are free of charge and open to all.  Refreshments will also be served.

1.00pm Monday 31st May: Mr. Pat Leahy

Pat Leahy is the political editor of The Sunday Business Post newspaper, and is a regular contributor to radio and television programmes.  Pat Leahy holds a degree in law from University College Dublin and was a Reuters fellow at Oxford University in 2001.

Pat Leahy will give a lecture on the central themes of his book Showtime: The Inside Story of Fianna Fáil in Power. The lecture will look at the success of the Fianna Fail political model in the era of Bertie Ahern and how that political success led to inevitable failures in government.

Library Lecture Series, June 2009

Waterford Institute of Technology Libraries will be hosting a series of lunch time lectures on Wednesday 3rd, Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 17th June. The lectures will commence at 1.00pm each week and will last for approximately 1 hour. The venue is the Auditorium in the main building on the Cork Road Campus.

The lecture programme is as follows:
Wednesday 3rd June: 1.00 – Professor Brian Havel
‘The Life of Miroslav Havel, the first employee and chief designer of Waterford Crystal’

Brian F. Havel is Professor of Law, Associate Dean, Director of the International Aviation Law Institute, and Director of the International and Comparative Law Program at DePaul University College of Law in Chicago.  Brian is author of the book “Maestro of Crystal” and he will present a copy of the book to the Library at the talk.

Tuesday 9th June: 1.00 – Dr Niall Byrne
‘Lecture on the Wadding Papers – Luke Wadding (1588-1657), the Franciscan priest and renowned Waterford theologian.’

Dr. Niall Byrne is an expert and renowned scholar on Waterford history.  Niall’s publications include being editor of ‘The great parchment book of Waterford : Liber Antiquissimus Civitatis Waterfordiae’ and authoring ‘The Irish crusade : a history of the Knights Hospitaller, the Knights Templar, and the Knights of Malta, in the South-East of Ireland’.

Wednesday 17th June: 1.00 – Mr. Guy Jones
‘Irish Lebanese relations in History to present times and the value of Richard Pococke’s ‘A Description of the East and Some other Countries’ in the Middle East and Lebannon’.  This valuable resource is part of the Christ Church Cathedral Collection which WIT Libraries are custodians of.

Guy Jones is chairperson of the Irish Lebanese Cultural Foundation and a scholar of Pococke’s works.

Admissions to the lunchtime lectures are free and open to all. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be served on the day.

As part of National Heritage Week, 24th – 31st August,

WIT Libraries, in assocation with the Heritage Council,

is pleased to host a number of public talks.

This is also an opportunity to view a selection of the prestigious Christ Church Cathedral collection, housed in the special collections room, Luke Wadding Library.
